Verifying that Alaska's Salmon Fishery is Sustainably and Responsibly Managed

RFM provides independent, third-party certification of the management of the major Alaska commercial fisheries. Certification provides additional assurance and verification to buyers, markets, and stakeholders that seafood from Alaska is responsibly managed and sustainable. Since 2015, AFDF has served the industry as the Client for the RFM certification of the Alaska salmon fishery. As the Client, AFDF successfully completed a first full five-year reassessment in 2017 and has maintained RFM certification for all regions, all gear types, and all salmon species.

On November 4th, 2022, Global Trust Certification announced the 2nd surveillance audit of the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification for Alaska Salmon. Please see the announcement document for details:

2020 RFM Salmon Client Group List

Since 2015, AFDF has served industry as the Client for the RFM certification of the Alaska salmon fishery. As the Client, AFDF successfully completed a first full five-year reassessment in 2017 and has maintained RFM certification for all regions, all gear types and all salmon species. The fourth annual surveillance audit was completed this April and the second full five-year reassessment will be completed in May, 2020.

AFDF completed billing for membership in the Client Group for the 2020 salmon season this May. In the future, annual billing will take place each spring, prior to the salmon season. Thank you to the member companies of the Client Group which are primary processors of Alaska salmon. These companies paid a cost-share rate of $82 per million pounds of salmon purchased in 2020. AFDF is always looking for ways to reduce costs, and when there is a surplus in this program budget, the funds are rolled-forward to the next year, which is what allows AFDF to charge a reduced rates.

2018 RFM Salmon Client Group List

Acting as Client for Alaska salmon in 2015, AFDF is pleased to announce the completion of the 3rd annual surveillance audit (ASA). As a result, the Alaska salmon fishery maintains RFM certification for all regions, all gear types, and all salmon species. The final report can be viewed online here. At this time, no other certification besides RFM covers all Alaska salmon statewide.

The 4th ASA for Alaska salmon is currently underway with the certification body (CB), GlobalTrust. Since a second CB (DNV) has recently received accreditation to work in the Alaska RFM Program, AFDF issued an RFP to complete the five-year re-certification of Alaska salmon in 2016. AFDF reviewed the proposals and awarded the contract to GlobalTrust. AFDF remains committed to finding efficiencies for industry and representing its best interests.
