Sydney Almgren
Alaska Sea Grant State Fellow
Sydney is an Alaska Sea Grant State Fellow and is excited to be a part of AFDF for her fellowship.
Sydney received her undergraduate degree in Environmental & Ecosystem Sciences from Washington State University, and also earned minors in Spanish and Sustainable Development, further broadening her education towards sustainable resource development. Through different internships and research opportunities, Sydney developed an interest in sustainable fisheries. She pursued jobs in Colorado, Idaho, and Wyoming, where she experienced fisheries management in both high mountain streams and hatchery raceways. Sydney gained insight into how fisheries resources are managed from both ecologic and economic perspectives.
Sydney will soon graduate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) with an MS in Fisheries. Her thesis investigated the genomic population structure of Pacific herring spawning aggregations in the eastern Bering Sea. In her time at UAF, and in Alaska as a whole, Sydney’s understanding and appreciation of fisheries resources has expanded greatly. Having grown up in Colorado, she is amazed by the diversity of marine resources in Alaska and the central role they play in communities.
In her free time, Sydney enjoys being outdoors, especially to fish, forage, and camp. She enjoys cooking, reading, and spending time with her family, friends, and dog Copper.
